Novelis Gifts to Support Science and Mathematics Summer Camp at EKU
Novelis, the world’s leading producer and recycler of aluminum products recently donated $7,000 to support EKU’s annual Science and Mathematics summer camp, bringing their three-year total support for the Eeastern Kentucky University College of Science to $21,000.
Science and Math camp at EKU is a five-day, residential camp open to rising high school juniors and seniors. Participants stay in the newest residence halls and learn in the state-of-the-art Science Building. In addition to science and math activities, students attend information sessions on the college application process, choosing a major, financial aid and career options.
A ceremony to celebrate the company’s gift was held in the Science Building on EKU’s campus in September as part of the annual Celebration of Science and Mathematics week. Environmental health and safety assistant Tammy Peyton and human resources leader Monica Johnson represented Novelis at the ceremony.
While thanking Novelis for their generosity, Dr. Tom Otieno, dean of the College of Science, observed that the camp has grown both in number and geographical impact.
“Last year’s camp had 20 participants from seven counties in Kentucky and one county in Ohio,” said Otieno. “This year, we had 30 participants, 29 of whom came from 12 counties in Kentucky and one from Puerto Rico.”
Information about the 2020 science and mathematics summer camp will be available in early 2020.
