STUDENT OF THE MONTH: Melanie Helvie
Melanie Helvie is pursuing a Geography Major with a certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). She previously earned an Associate’s Degree from Lexington Community College and had a career as a certified Dental Technician, but always wanted to return to school for a bachelor’s degree.
Already a resident of Madison County, she chose EKU because of its variety of degree options. “Coming back to college as a non-traditional student was scary, but professors and administrators and even traditional age students made me feel very comfortable here,” she said. She ultimately decided on the Geography major with GIS certificate because she likes the attention to detail this field requires and that art and science skills can be combined for use in GIS and remote sensing.
While at EKU, Melanie served as the Secretary of the Geography club and as a member of the College of Science Dean’s Advisory Board.
Melanie looks forward to spending her last semester studying and attending classes in the New Science Building. She hopes to use the skills she gained here at EKU to assist with humanitarian efforts or help with disaster relief or environmental concerns. Melanie lives in Richmond with her husband and 2 dogs. She plans to graduate in December 2017.
